Giving Wellness

Funny how much has changed in the 7 months I've been using essential oils.  Over this past holiday weekend, I diffused oils at my parents house, both to clean the air and to make it smell holiday-ish (I diffused a blend called Christmas Spirit which I LOVE!!)

I brought a travel bag of oils with me that I wasn't comfortable leaving home without, including Thieves, Lemon, Deep Relief, Sleepyize, and Stress Away.  I can honestly say that we used all of them as well as several others in the short weekend we were there.  And I learned, when my sister spattered her favorite shirt with bacon grease, that you can use lemon oil or eucalyptus oil to get out grease stains.  Who knew??

Anyway, I am excited to share wellness with my friends and family this year as gifts.  I have a bottle of Stress Away and Christmas Spirit to give the sitter, Stress Away Roll-Ons for the teachers, Mister for my husband, and Gratitude for myself.  And apparently I'm talking about how I use my oils non-stop, because suddenly several friends and family members are asking about buying oils and signing up for memberships.  I'm so grateful for these oils, and how they've changed my life and my family's level of wellness!  I can't wait to see what they do for us in the upcoming year!

Your Body's Not Meant to Run on That. . .

I recently listened to an online webinar as part of the Young Living Essential Oils Summit, which touched on a lot of topics around healthy eating and healthy living.  One metaphor that really stuck with me is when the speaker said the following (paraphrased): If your car was out of gas, you wouldn't fill it with diesel fuel would you?  Because your car is not built to run on diesel.  Just like your body is not meant to run on chemicals, synthetic and artificial additives, or genetically modified foods.  So why would you put that in your body?  Your body is meant to run on foods directly from nature - plants and animals that have not been altered, chemically treated, or taken out of their natural environments.  That's what we should be feeding our bodies!

Admittedly, I am far from fully clean in my eating habits, but every small change I make is another change in the right direction.  A lot of those changes have come from removing toxins from my home by replacing toxic cleaning products with natural, non-toxic ones,

I've also started making my own beauty/skincare products using all natural ingredients,

And some of it involves just a greater awareness of what I'm putting into my body and where it comes from.

In this season of increased gratitude, I am so grateful to have resources, information, and products available to make healthy changes in my life and in the lives of my husband and sons.

Supporting your Endocrine System

This one is near and dear to me, as someone who has an auto-immune disease of the endocrine system (Graves's Disease).  For years I was on medication for my condition, but have been determined to be "in remission" now for the last 2 years.  My various thyroid levels keep checking out ok, so I don't need my medication anymore, but I still occasionally experience some of the symptoms that accompany Graves and Hyperthyroidism.  I support my Endocrine System with many of the oils listed above, in particular EndoFlex, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, and Progessence Plus.  These oils smell wonderful, whether in the diffuser or used topically (I don't diffuse Progessence plus as it is a serum, not an oil), and I appreciate having them to help keep the symptoms at bay. . .

Supporting your Digestive System

One of the first systems I supported with oils was my digestive system - I started putting a drop of peppermint oil in my water at lunch time because I noticed how much less sluggish and bloated I felt during the afternoon.  And we all know about the benefits of ginger when you're not feeling great!  I have since fallen in love with DiGize, though, and swear by it for any times I'm not feeling 100%.

Supporting your Cardiovascular System

While it is most important to support your cardiovascular system with a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can also complement your system with a number of Essential Oils and supplements.  I am personally a huge fan of PanAway and Lavender, I love my Longevity Oil, I almost always have orange oil going in my diffuser, and I could go on and on about the deliciousness of Ningxia Red!  Do some research, on sources like PubMed to learn how your cardiovascular system can benefit from incorporating some of these oils, blends, and supplements into your regular routine,

I want to remind you that I have no medical training or background, I am writing only what I know from my own experience and research.  It is important to discuss essential oil use with your doctor, particularly if you are looking to use oils for medicinal purposes.

If you have questions about this or any of the oils or products I have discussed in my posts, please contact me.  And if you're interested in having access to these products for wholesale costs (24% off retail price), click here for information about enrolling.

Oils for Body Systems

I'm so excited about this next series of posts - recently there's been a lot of focus on which oils support which body systems, and I have some great information that I can't wait to share.  I am finding that more and more there is a ton of information available online about how to use oils to support your different body systems, so I'm excited to do some learning along side everyone else as I post about each system.  When I think of wellness, I tend to think of supporting the immune system, and assume that will take care of the rest.  And for myself, with my own health challenges, I tend to focus a lot of research on the endocrine system.  I am eager to learn more about how I can support each system to prevent problems from occurring down the line.

If you have any questions or would like any information about things I've posted about, feel free to send me a message.  And if you are interested in purchasing essential oils, supplements, and beauty products of exceptionally high quality, at a 24% discount, click to get more information.

**Reminder, I am not a trained medical professional.  The information I share is based on my own research and experience.  It is not intended to be medical advice.  If you are interested in using oils for medicinal purposes, it is very important that you do your own research and consult with a medical professional.

Day 13: Essential Rewards Program

When I first signed up for a Young Living Membership, I was more than skeptical about the Essential Rewards Program.  It took all of one month for me to realize why I needed to enroll.  As an essential rewards member, I can set up an auto-ship order that goes in on the date of my choosing each month, containing the products I select.  I can customize my order as many times as I want during the month, I can change my processing date if I need something sooner, or want to wait till later in the month, and each month there are "bonuses" for ER members, through which I have gotten quite a few free bottles of oils or supplements.  But none of those are what I consider to be the best part of Essential Rewards -  I earn Essential Reward Points for every order I place (the percentage I earn increases the longer I am a member).  Those points are useable to purchase products from Young Living.  Again - free oils!

Sign up for a Young Living Membership, and enroll in the Essential Rewards Program to start reaping the benefits for yourself!

Day 12: Ningxia Red

In addition to being a super-healthy source of all sorts of important nutrients, NingXia Red is DELICIOUS!!  I have only tried it a few times, but it immediately makes you feel more energized and alert.  Those who drink an ounce or two of NingXia Red as part of their daily regimen will go on and on for hours about how their health has improved since adding it to their lives.

Additionally, there are other NingXia products that are just as wonderful - myself, I love the NingXia Nitro, which is like Red but with a little extra energy kick.  Excellent for a pre-workout boost!

To try NingXia Red for yourself, please send a message.  And if you want your own PremiumStarter Kit (which includes all of the oils we're looking at during this challenge) click here to get started!

Day 11: Stress Away

Stress Away is an oil I absolutely LOVE!  It was my first oil blend that I tried, chosen because of the name - it said it would do exactly what I needed an oil to do, I loved the smell from the very beginning and I have to say, I have not been disappointed with the results, either.  I wear this like perfume on work days, finding that I can approach busy schedules and difficult situations with a more calm and rational head.  When I feel the familiar indications of anxiety creeping up, Stress Away on my neck and wrists immediately help settle my nerves.  I also love diffusing this oil for a calm atmosphere.  I have heard of people using this to help them fall asleep.  This one doesn't tend to make me tired, just calm.

I can't say enough about this oil.  It is one I have with me at work, in my purse, and at home.  In my opinion, if you're only interested in trying one essential oil to see how you like them, this is the one to try!

If you would like help getting this or other oils, please send a message.  And if you want your own PremiumStarter Kit (which includes all of the oils we're looking at during this challenge) click here to get started!

Favorite Fall Diffuser Combos

Day 10: DiGize

It's funny that today I am posting about Digize, since I used it last night for my own stomach comfort before bed, and just used the kid-safe version (Tummygize) to help my son's stomach settle a moment ago.  I love this oil.  It is one of the oils I refuse to let run out at my house!  A drop or two right into my belly button after I've over indulged, and I immediately feel better!  Not everyone loves the smell - ginger, anise, fennel, peppermint, tarragon, lemongrass, patchouli and juniper make it a very strong smelling oil, but it is so worth it!And I find that ginger and fennel are the two smells that stick around longest, neither of which I find offensive!  If you haven't tried this oil yet, you MUST!  Especially with winter and "icky tummy" season approaching!

Day 9: Thieves Oil

Oh my goodness, I don't know if there are enough word to describe how amazing Thieves oil is!!  It smells like fall and holidays and baked goods.  It cleans wonderfully, and it is a great support to your immune system.  Thieves was one of the first oils that I learned about when I was just starting to discover essential oils, and it's easy to see why it hooked me!  I love using Thieves, diluted in carrier oil, on my children and myself at night, as we're working to avoid the back-to-school-bugs that we're all being exposed to.  We put it on our feet and up and down our spines.  As I type, I have Thieves diffusing in the kitchen.  I have added it to warm water with honey for a delicious and comforting tea, and I have added it to my washing machine to freshen our clothes.
This is an amazing oil, and one that every oil user I know loves!  If you would like help getting this or other oils, please send a message.  And if you want your own PremiumStarter Kit (which includes all of the oils we're looking at during this challenge) click here to get started!

Day 8: Panaway

I think of all the oils in the Premium Starter Kit, this is the one that I loved smelling from the very beginning.  It is a fantastic oil for feet, legs, and backs after a long day of standing.  I also love this one after a good run or a tough work out.  I have not tried the suggestion below for a "pleasing balm", but it is on the short list of DIY items to make next.

If you would like help getting this or other oils, please send a message.  And if you want your own PremiumStarter Kit (which includes all of the oils we're looking at during this challenge) click here to get started!

Day 7 - Purification

I am not exaggerating when I saw that not a day goes by when we don't use Purification in our house!  It is a fantastic oil and has a fresh, clean smell.  It works wonderfully to deodorize - shoes, garbage cans, musty basements, bathrooms, you name it!  It makes a great addition to DIY deodorant, and it gets rid of "left over cooking smells" that hang around long past the end of the meal!  I add a few drops of Purification to my dryer balls to help my laundry smell fresh and clean.  I put a cotton ball with several drops of purification in a plastic bags with my shoes if the're needing a little freshening, and we diffuse this in the car with a USB diffuser to clean and freshen the air in there.

If you haven't tried Purification Blend, I can't stress enough how versatile and effective this oil is!  Give it a try and I'd bet you'll fall in love, too.  If you would like help getting this or other oils, please send a message.  And if you want your own Premium Starter Kit (which includes all of the oils we're looking at during this challenge) click here to get started!

Day 6: RC

RC is a proprietary Young Living blend, containing three types of eucalyptus oil, myrtle, spruce, lavender, lemon, peppermint, cypress, marjoram and pine oils.  It smells lovely - kind of a spicy floral eucalyptus smell, and it is a MUST HAVE around our house!  We diffuse this at night to help everyone in the room breathe clearly and sleep soundly (my husband tends to be a very NOISY sleeper, but RC takes care of that).  It helps me breathe clearly on my worst allergy days, simply with a swipe across my chest and neck in a carrier oil.  It is wonderful for stilling coughs and relieving congestion.  I won't let us run out of this essential!
RC is a new addition to the premium starter kit, along with the Day 5 featured oil - copaiba.  If you would like to get your own premium starter kit, simply click here!

Day 5 - Copaiba

I find copaiba essential oil fascinating.  It is known as an amplifier, in other words, it strengthens the effects of other oils it's blended with.  I have never used copaiba on it's own, but it seems like I am using it in every blend I maker - for my post-workout salve, for my skin firming oil, along with our focus roller ball blend, and some of our night time diffuser blends. (Future posts coming about my favorite roller ball and diffuser blends!)  It is a lesser known oil, and I'm excited to continue to learn about it!

Day 4 - Peppermint Oil

I've already shared some of the many ways that I use peppermint essential oil in my everyday life.  Here are some additional suggestions.

Day 3: Frankincense Oil

I've struggled for a long time to write a post about Frankincense oil and how much I've come to love it, but I am not even sure where to begin. Much of what you hear, see, or read about the amazing benefits of Frankincense oil is related to specific medical conditions, and as I am not a doctor, have no medical training, and try to write only of my own experience with oils, I don't want to give the impression of giving medical advice.  But as it is the next oil up in my Young Living "Get-to-know-your-oils-14-day-challenge", I am going to attempt to share my passion for daily use of Frankincense oil.

Most of us have heard of Frankincense Oil - a particularly famous story involving a certain baby in a manger, a trio of wisemen, and some gifts upon the Child's birth has made frankincense well known. I have never looked into why frankincense was considered a gift significant enough to bring to the Christ Child.  There are many theories about why these three gifts were given to Jesus at birth, and one is that the gifts were practical in nature.  Some feel the reason that frankincense was given was  that it was well known at that point in time of the healing powers, and it was given as a gift because if was considered to be an essential part of healing practice.

For me, I have to say I have never done any reading or research into Frankincense oil before the last 6 months or so, and I am shocked that I haven't heard of its benefits before.  Every time I read something new, I just keep thinking "Why aren't more people talking about this?!?!?!?!"  In a matter of weeks it went from being something I had only heard about in December each year to being my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE OIL!!!!

What's all the fuss about? Here's just a sample
Dr. Axe - Frankincense Oil
Frankincense Oil for Skincare

When I first smelled frankincense oil, I was not sold - I felt like it was too strong and musty smelling for me.  I have to say that now it is one of my favorite smelling oils.  I am immediately calmed and uplifted by the smell of it.  I have grown to love adding it to my diffuser combos, DIY skincare products, and just smelling it "neat" and un-blended.

Day 2 - Lavender Oil

It seems like every week we have a new use for lavender oil around my house - relaxation, relief from bug bites, helping with headaches. . . what a versatile oil!

This is a great oil to start out with if you are new to oils! If you want more information or are interested in this or other oils, feel free to send me a message.  And if you're ready to start getting wholesale pricing on oils by signing up for your Premium Starter Kit, I'd love to help!

Day 1 - Lemon Oil

I've already posted about how much I love my lemon oil.  We clean with it all the time, I put it on my dryer balls to make my laundry smell fresh, I drink it in water, it is a great pick me up, and it gets permanent marker off of wood (yippee!!).

Lemon is a part of the Young Living Every Day Oils Collection, and it is truly used every day in my family.  I never let this one run out.

If you're interested in learning more about this oil please feel free to send me a message!  And if you're interested in getting the same wholesale pricing discount that I get for my oils, you can use this link to order your starter kit!

New Thieves Cleaning Products

With every day, I fall more in love with Thieves for cleaning - in July I tried Thieves Cleaner for the first time - we used it to make shower scrub, added it to the laundry, and used the spray to clean the bathrooms, kitchen, and floors.  Both my husband and I agree, we have never seen our showers cleaner, and we love that it doesn't hurt our skin, lungs, eyes, or make us nauseous!

At Annual Convention this past month, Young Living revealed three new Thieves line products - Laundry soap, Fruit and Vegetable Wash, and dish soap.  Now you can literally clean everything in your house with a safe, non-toxic, natural, product that smells AMAZING and supports your immune system at the same time.  It doesn't get any better than that!

Ready to try the Thieves Starter Kit or any other Young Living Products? You can send me a message to let me know how I can help you get started, or you can subscribe for a membership here.

My Oily Education

Someone recently asked me how to get started learning about oils.  As I started putting together a list for him, it got me thinking about all the many, many places I go to get information for myself about how to use my oils.  I wanted to share it here, so that any of you who are wondering how to get started learning about oils might be able to use some of the same resources I do.

As I believe I mentioned before, my first and most powerful exposure to essential oils was the testimony of other users.  Nothing was more convincing to me than someone I know and respect who has been actually using the oils personally.  As I began to research different companies to choose a source, I came across dozens and dozens of blogs written by passionate oil users.  I started following these blogs (I use Feedly to stay updated on new posts) and still continue to learn from them (stay tuned for a future post about some of those blogs).  One thing I was aware of, though, was that these bloggers were not medical professionals (myself included), so it was important for me to also do some learning from a different type of source.  I was introduced to Pub Med which provides some good information about essential oil singles (not specific blends or brands) and their potential health uses, possible concerns, etc.  I continue to go back there for information as well.  I have signed myself up for email newsletters from a variety of alternative medical doctors (Dr. Axe, Dr. Mercola, Dr. Eric Zielinski) and most importantly, I started talking with my medical providers about the oils I was interested in or was hearing about.

In looking for recipes, ideas, or recommendations for DIY products using my oils, I have again found that there are so many different places on the Internet to find this information.  Some offer explanation for why the ingredients work well in a product, some recipes are developed by trial and error of other users.  I have found lots of great eBooks (many free) that provide recipes and information.  There are also great books about the science of oils, information for medicinal use, etc.  I have listed a few of them below.  If you're serious about oils, it's worth the time, effort, and money to learn as much as you can about how to use them!

So do some looking, some reading, and some learning.  And if you decide oils are for you, keep going! If you're interested in learning more about the oils I have chosen to use for my family and myself, please feel free to send me a message!  And if you're interested in getting the same wholesale pricing discount that I get for my oils, you can use this link to order your starter kit!

Back to School

My Fellow Teachers, School Administrators, Child Care Providers, or anyone else who spends their days around children:

I don't need to tell you that Fall and Winter are rough on our immune systems! It seems like every time we start a new school year, my husband and I (both of us teachers) immediately catch some kind of a cold or bug.  Not to mention that fall tends to mean lice season in the schools!!  This year I head into the school year with an ace up my sleeve - my oils!!  I have spent the last couple months stocking up on my favorite calming blends (Stress Away, Valor, Grounding), my cleaning oils (Lemon, Thieves, Tea Tree, and Eucalyptus), my "healthy body" support oils (Thieves, DiGize, Peppermint, Oregano), and my "beat the bug early" oils ( RC, Ravintsara, Basil, Raven).  I spent yesterday making new Lemon Oil All-Purpose Cleaner, Foaming Hand Wash, and a variety of roller ball blends for my kids and myself.  I feel ready to fight off the back-to-school germs.

My kids will be ready for school, too.  We have Sleepyize to diffuse at night to help them stay well rested, Thieves to rub on their backs and feet to help support their immune systems, and Geneyus to diffuse in the morning to help us all be focused and alert.  I have my Tea Tree to put in the laundry to make everyone's clothes smell wonderful, and again, my Lemon Oil Cleaner that they can use to help me clean up without any concern for exposing them to toxins or harmful ingredients.  I am so grateful to have my oils and to have information available to help me know how to use them to make this a great start to the school year.

If you're interested in learning more about the oils I've mentioned above or about the oils I have chosen to use for my family and myself, please feel free to send me a message!  And if you're interested in getting the same wholesale pricing discount that I get for my oils, you can use this link to order your starter kit!

New Starter Kit and Wholesale Membership

In case you're just starting out in exploring oils (which was me a few months ago!) it is important to know that there are many EO manufacturers and suppliers out there.  Oils range in availability, price, and quality.  I always recommend that everyone do their own research to figure out 1) if essential oils are right for them and if so, 2) who to choose as a distributor for oils.  That being said, I have made no secret of the fact that I have chosen Young Living as my oil supplier.  I am happy to have individual conversations with anyone interested about how I arrived at that conclusion if you would like to contact me directly.  So as a result, this post is specifically about Young Living Oils and Membership.

Anyone is able (and welcome) to purchase Young Living products without any commitment or membership, simply by ordering through their website.  This is a nice feature for anyone needing just one individual type of oil, or just wanting to try one thing.  There are other options, though, for those looking for a more economical option.  Anyone with a wholesale membership with Young Living has the ability to purchase products at wholesale pricing (24% discount).  So if you want to try some oils but don't want to pay full price, you can ask a member (like me!) to order for you and ship them to you - even with the shipping cost they will be cheaper than full price with shipping.  Otherwise, you can sign up for a membership of your own.  You need to select a starter kit (ranging from $45 - $160) which includes information about the oils and the company in additional to the products (varying based on which kit you choose).  Then you have access to the same pricing and benefits as I do.  The Starter Kits are not available for individual sale.  They are only available with a membership.

The exciting thing is that the Premium Starter Kit, which is Young Living's most popular starter kit (and best value of the starter kits) has just received an update, and in my opinion the new Premium Starter Kit is a huge improvement on the old version (which I loved, too).
(The information and images below, about each of the starter kits, come directly from the Young Living website)

The most affordable of the Starter Kits is the Basic Kit.  It is available in English or Spanish and includes the following:

So if you're thinking about a membership. . . . let me know how I can help you.  And if you use this link to sign up for membership, you will become a part of the same membership organization as I am, gaining access to all of the additional benefits mentioned above.

Good luck!

Tea Tree Oil - Becoming a Believer

Melaleuca alternifolia is highly regarded for its wide range of uses. It supports the immune system* and is beneficial for the skin. Commonly known as Tea Tree Oil. Earth Kosher Certified.
Most elementary school teachers have heard of tea tree oil - it's the one we all know to keep on hand if our schools have lice in the building (which we do every year!).  There are tea tree oil shampoos and conditioners, treatment recipes, and hair spritzes that are reported to help keep lice away and help treat existing cases.  I had no idea, though, that tea tree oil is dramatically different than tea tree hair products, nor did I know how many other uses there are for this cleansing, antiseptic oil.

Before I begin to convince you (as I have been convinced) that tea tree oil is another must have, let me reiterate that I have no medical training or background.  The statements I make in my posts have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA, I am merely sharing my experiences, both from reading I've done and what I've tried. With that being said, these are my thoughts on tea tree oil.

File:Melaleuca alternifolia (DITSL).JPGHere's the problem - I HATE the smell of tea tree oil!  I think it smells like mothballs.  But the more I read, the more I believe that it is worth the smell to get the benefits.  Below are some of the ways I've found tea tree useful so far, as well as some of the things I want to try with my tea tree oil next.

I live in the midwest, and at this time of the year, the basement is stale, damp, and musty. At least once every few days, I run the diffuser in the basement with tea tree for a few hours, followed by lemon for a few hours.  This makes the air feel and smell fresher and cleaner.  And studies have been conducted to show that it is actually cleaning the air of molds and fungi.  Now that I know more about the benefits, I will be adding a couple drops of tea tree oil to the homemade cleaner I made with lemon oil to add to its effectiveness.

On a whim, one day, I decided to try something.  (Sorry if this is too much information!!) I know that body odor is caused by bacteria under our arms.  After I got out of the shower, I swiped tea tree oil under my arms.  The smell was almost unbearable to me, so after about 10 minutes, I followed with a swipe of lemon oil.  This neutralized the smell a bit, and after about a half hour the smell was gone all together.  It worked way better than any deodorant I've ever used.  So experiencing this, and knowing what I know about why my running clothes retain odors, I think next I'm going to start adding a couple drops to my laundry when I have a load of my athletic clothes (and maybe my bath towels, too. . . hmmmm) to help kill the bacteria that they like to hold on to, being synthetic fabrics.  And a couple drops on cotton balls tucked into the toes of particularly stinky shoes. . . the possibilities for killing bacteria and eliminating odorsare endless!

I have used tea tree oil to disinfect minor cuts and scrapes, always with good results - I have read that it is great for nail infections, though I've yet to try that. It is also good for relieving itch from bug bites.  Anything that helps with that during summer in Wisconsin is great!!

So I'm just learning more about this incredibly useful oil.  As I read more, I have ideas of where I want to go next with this oil (once I get a new bottle in my next order, since my original one is now empty!).  I just read that it's recommended to soak your toothbrush in diluted tea tree oil once a week or so to kill the bacteria that is housed in the bristles.  I've also seen recipes for making toothpaste out of it, although I don't know how I'd do with that taste!  Check out this list of uses for tea tree oil.  And if you're not familiar with Dr. Axe, I highly recommend checking out his website!  What I love about his website and his EO recommendations is that he uses a lot of medical research and studies to back up his recommendations.  Can't argue with that!

The "Allergy Trio" - My seasonal best friend!

**The experience in this post are based on my personal use of oils.  I do not have any medical background or training, the statements I make are not intended to be taken as medical advice, and have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA.  I feel passionately about my own experiences with oils, so I want to share those experiences with others.  If you are new to oils or have medical concerns, please consult with a medical professional before you begin, and by all means, do your research!

If you've read my blog posts, you have heard me mention my affinity for the "allergy trio" of lavender, lemon and peppermint oils to help me handle seasonal allergies. Every May I get hammered with pollen allergies - I have the itchy eyes, the congestion, the scratchy throat, the cold symptoms - all of it.  I have always relied on a Claritin in the morning every day, but this year, I decided to try a more natural approach - the "allergy bomb" that I had heard about in posts about essential oil use.  I started with diffusing - three drops of each - lemon, lavender and peppermint - overnight in our bedroom.  Both my husband and I noticed a difference immediately!  He commented the very first morning that his eyes weren't puffy, and he didn't feel stuffed up.  I noticed that I didn't sneeze a dozen times when I first woke up.  A huge improvement on the "norm" for us!!

In the spring I sponsor a running club at our school - it is the long standing joke that after we finish our run, I sneeze about a hundred times.  I started taking the allergy trio - 3 drops of each - in a capsule before our runs, and I noticed that not only could I run better (I suppose because I could breathe better) but I didn't sneeze at all afterward.

Yesterday my husband was out mowing the lawn while I was cleaning inside the house.  I noticed that I was very congested and my throat was itchy.  I finally realized it was from the grass and his mowing.  I used my allergy trio, and within 20 minutes I was feeling so much better!  My husband came in and asked if it was a safe time of day for him to try a capsule for the first time.  I reassured him that this was one of the advantages of the oils - they didn't keep you awake like OTC allergy meds did, so you could take them at any time of day.  He tried it and within 10 minutes he said he was symptom free.

My only regret is that we have a whole bottle of Claritin in the bathroom that I have not opened up more than three or four times this season. . . . I haven't taken one in about 2 months, and I feel great!  What a wonderful feeling to know that I'm managing my allergies naturally and not with chemicals!

Lavender Oil - I thought I knew it all!!

When I ordered my everyday oils starter kit from Young Living, I figured I would occasionally use the lavender oil for sleep and relaxation, but here I am 6 weeks in, and I use lavender more than any other oil in the kit, and in ways I never imagined!

If you've read my past posts, you've heard me talk about the "allergy bomb" - equal parts peppermint, lemon, and lavender - that diffuse nightly to help both my husband and I with our seasonal allergies, and that we both take daily by capsule to help alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms and congestion without the side effects of antihistamines or OTC allergy medicines.  You've also heard me mention that I apply diluted lavender and valerian oils on my kids' feet and my husband's to help with restful and deep sleep.  As I type this, there are diffusers running in both of my kids' rooms with lavender in them to help them calm down and fall asleep.  When my older child has fits (as 6 year olds are prone to do) I can calm him immediately by rubbing some lavender on his chest.  Much more effective than a time out, yelling, or anything else we'd tried.

In my last post, I talked about how I've used lavender for skin care products as well.  I have dabbed lavender oil straight onto cuts and scrapes to help them heal, and I have learned that the horrible itchy patch on my left elbow, which never seems to go away, can be healed with lavender.  And I anticipate using lavender this summer to help with sunburns and bug bites.

As  I started researching essential oils, I saw that lavender was referred to as the "swiss army knife" of essential oils and now I know why!!

update: Recently I spent an afternoon making a variety of beauty products with my Young Living oils.  I found, not terribly surprisingly, that most of the skincare recipes called for lavender oil.  Its skincare benefits are well known, and it is mild on the skin, as well as smelling great.  After making all of my DIY products, I can now say that I am using lavender oil on my skin every single day.  I can't wait till my rosemary oil arrives in a few days so I can make a lavender rosemary lotion (which is supposed to be amazing for dry skin).  Doesn't that sound like it will be heavenly!?
